Who Is Donna Bletcher?
As an elementary teacher in Delta, British Columbia, I have taught Kindergarten through Grade 7, provided learning support for students who feel underconfident about math, and designed and implemented enrichment programs for elementary schools. At the district level, I was a member of Delta’s Numeracy Team, followed by being Delta’s Math Coordinator. I collaborated with school staff and individual teachers, helping to increase their repertoire of teaching strategies. I have presented many professional development workshops and elementary classroom demonstrations.
For seventeen years, I coordinated MathStretch, a challenge program for sixty students from across the Delta School District. I taught face-to-face sessions and mentored participants through an online component.
I was honoured to receive the BC Association of Mathematics Teachers’ Outstanding Elementary Teacher Award. This award recognizes excellence in mathematics instruction and evidence of a positive impact on students and staff.
Whether I am supporting students who require extra encouragement or inspiring those eager to be challenged, my goals remain the same: to make learning exciting, build confidence, strengthen critical and creative thinking, and nurture the curiosity to keep asking questions.
I want students to leave sessions thinking:
“I can figure this out.
I can think in different ways.
I can do more than I thought I could.”
